Name: Bilal Nadeem
Major: Anthropology
Description: Bilal Nadeem, from Brooklyn, New York, is pursuing a Ph.D. in anthropology at Stanford and an M.D. at the Yale School of Medicine. Bilal’s doctoral work focuses on the lives of Muslim Syrians who were disabled in the country's civil war and forcibly displaced to Jordan and Lebanon. He specializes in the Eastern Mediterranean, a region ravaged by Western imperialism, militarism, and state violence which have uprooted and set in motion millions of Muslims. He hopes to understand how these scenes of mass violence, destruction, and dislocation register within the grammar of Islam and its discursive traditions in the Levant. Which theological, ethical, and spiritual concepts resonate – and which of them unravel – in the face of overwhelming injury and death? And how does contemporary technowarfare mark the transmission, authority, and intelligibility of traditions? Bilal earned an M.Phil. with distinction in Health, Medicine, and Society from the University of Cambridge and an A.B. in Regenerative Biology.
