    Bio: Basil AlSubee is a filmmaker and Masters student at NYU's Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies. Basil's work centers on the social and political potential of filmmaking, coalition-building, and futurist imagination for Muslims and non-Muslims on the peripheries of white supremacy. Specifically, Basil has worked on films about Arab-Black solidarity in Detroit, and student environmental justice activism at the University of Michigan. At NYU, Basil aims to create an experimental documentary that reflects on Syrian film and television archives, history, and social memory in ways that critique both Ba'athist nationalist history, and the politics of the white savior gaze on the Syrian refugee crisis
