Description: Armaan is a PhD student at the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Harvard University. As a Fulbright Fellow in 2011, Armaan researched the politicization of Morocco’s largest Sufi order and its popularity among Muslim communities of Europe. Her MA thesis took a more historical turn and examined a 15th century spiritual manual by the Moroccan scholar and saint, Ahmed Zarruq. Much of Armaan’s work broadly concerns the relationship between time and social context in the production of religious texts and ideologies. Aside from her academic research on Islam, Armaan is also passionate about working directly within the Muslim community. She is a researcher for Noor Kids, a children’s book company that seeks to instill Islamic ethics, spirituality and civic engagement in young American Muslims. She holds a BA in Anthropology from Loyola University and MA in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Chicago.
