    Description: A native of Brookyn, New York, Omar Hammad holds a Ph.D. candidate in Media Studies from Rutgers University. His research examines the intersections of Islam, race, gender, and civic engagement on social media. His dissertation explored the hybrid online and offline lives of US Muslims in New York City, and how online spaces create counter publics for the expression of identity and political views/engagement of those US Muslims. Hammad was recipient of the 2020 Jack G. and Bernice M. Shaheen Endowed Media Scholarship for Excellence in Media Studies. In 2020, he was also awarded a fellowship from the Muslim Women and Media Training Institute funded by the Henry Luce Foundation and the University of California, Davis. In August 2020, he won the Top-Student award for his paper from the Religion and Media Interest Group of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. In December 2020, the paper was published in the Journal of Religion and Media.
