Press Release: Lawsuit Helps Create Law Student Scholarships

Dated: Monday, January 22, 2018

In recent years, the efforts of various communities to honor the deeply cherished notions of freedom of religion and equal protection enshrined in our Constitution have been stymied. Many of these battles have gone to the court, including a case affecting the Muslim community brought in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey.

Thanks to the efforts of the community and leading New York City law firm Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP (PBWT), the Islamic Society of Basking Ridge in New Jersey was granted the right to build its mosque. But the good news doesn’t end there as PBWT is continuing its commitment to the community by providing a substantial gift to ISF in order to create the David F. Dobbins Memorial Scholarship Fund. The David F. Dobbins Memorial Scholarship Fund is being funded with legal fees the Firm recovered in connection with the settlement of the landmark civil rights lawsuit.

The endowed David F. Dobbins Memorial Scholarship Fund will award two $10,000 scholarships annually to American Muslim law students. The David F. Dobbins Memorial Scholarship Fund honors one of the firm’s partners who fought for the civil rights of vulnerable populations in state and federal courts through his long career and passed in 2017.

ISF is a leading national scholarship organization which encourages the higher education of American Muslims committed to public service. “We’re truly indebted to PBWT for its generous donation which will build upon the legacy of David F. Dobbins, Esq. The scholarship will encourage legal education in the American Muslim community and empower the next generation of social justice advocates, while at the same time advancing the ideals of scholarship, leadership and public service for all Americans” said Salman Ravala, an attorney and member of the Advisory Board of ISF.

This is not only a historic moment for our community, but one that empowers us to continue fighting for our rights and the rights of others. Together, with the power of our community, partners, and allies, we will ensure that our religious freedom in this country is always protected.
