maher hathout

Dr. Maher Hathout (1936–2015) was a pioneering American-Muslim leader and co-founder of the Muslim Public Affairs Council. Born in Cairo and later settling in the U.S., he dedicated his life to promoting a vision of Islam rooted in coexistence, reason, and American civic values. As Chairman and Spokesperson for the Islamic Center of Southern California, he advocated for a distinctly American Muslim identity—one grounded in faith and patriotism.

Hathout defended civil liberties, and promoted interfaith collaboration, co-founding the Religious Coalition Against War in the Middle East. He was the first Muslim to offer prayers at both the Democratic and Republican National Conventions in 2000 and regularly spoke at Capitol Hill and the State Department. Known for his moral courage and bridge-building, Hathout left a legacy of leadership, moderation, and dedication to justice, inspiring generations of American Muslims to find their voice.
