Name: Mariama Badjie
Recipient Year: 2022
Major: Public Policy & Management
Description: Mariama Badjie is a second-year Public Policy & Management (PPM) student at Carnegie Mellon’s Heinz School of Public Policy. As a PPM student on the Washington, D.C. track, Mariama is completing her Heinz Policy Fellowship at the Congressional Research Service while completing her master’s coursework. A child of The Bronx and the daughter of Gambian immigrants, she grew up at the intersection of the African immigrant and Black American experiences—experiences that made her passionate about racial, economic, and social justice from a young age. Mariama graduated with a B.S. from Hunter College, where she studied Public Health and Public Policy. Since graduating, she has been exploring ways to combine social welfare policy, racial justice, and faith-based activism through her work experiences in nonprofit and community organizing spaces, including the Congressional Hunger Center; the Kairos Center for Race, Religions and Social Justice; the Poor People’s Campaign; and the Roosevelt Institute.
