At Berkeley Law, Zainab is the co-Editor in Chief of the Berkeley Journal of Middle Eastern and Islamic Law, the Equity and Inclusion chair for the Coalition for Diversity and a leader of the Prisoner Advocacy Network. Zainab is active with the Berkeley Law Committee Against Torture, Law Students for Justice in Palestine, and serves on the student advisory board for the Berkeley Center for Race and Gender. Zainab has been selected as an American Society of International Law Berkeley fellow. She will be working as a summer associate at Reed Smith in 2018 and is a recipient of their Deborah Broyles Diverse Scholars Award.
Bio: Before beginning law school, Zainab has been serving as the Coordinator of Muslim Social Services, a humanitarian social service organization of which she is also a founding member. In 2015, Zainab graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor of Knowledge Integration, joint major in Political Science and a minor in History. In her senior thesis, Zainab coined the term “multiplex identity” to describe people who hold multiple cultural identities and/or who hold identities that place them at the intersections of oppressed identities, and she has written and spoken extensively on topics related to identity, racism, and Islamophobia. Zainab is interested in building inclusive communities, in issues of social and political justice, and in change through education. She co-founded the Palestine Solidarity Action Group at the University of Waterloo and has been actively engaged in issues of human rights and decolonization in Palestine and Kashmir. Zainab has also written for several publications, including the Qahwa Project online art and opinion magazine and The Community Edition newspaper.
