Yasmin Nouh is pursuing a master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University. Her concentration is in broadcast journalism, though she also has extensive experience in print, magazine, and radio journalism. Yasmin grew up in Los Angeles, California and is of Egyptian and Iranian descent.
While a student, Yasmin had the opportunity to intern at prominent media outlets such as ABC News and PBS where she gained valuable experience in broadcast journalism. After graduating from the University of California, Irvine in 2010, she traveled to Egypt to immerse herself in Arabic language study. Upon her return, she worked at Southern California Public Radio (an NPR affiliate station) and the Orange County Weekly where she reported on issues ranging from the local impact of the Arab Spring and the domestic use of drones to the rise of revolutionary hip hop music in the MENA region and the effect of SuperPACs on elections. In addition to the OC Weekly and NPR, her work has appeared in publications such as the Glendale News-Press and Multiamerican.org. Yasmin particularly enjoys reporting about religion and social justice issues in the United States.
Prior to enrolling at Columbia, Yasmin also served as the Communications Coordinator at the Council on American-Islamic Relations Greater Los Angeles area office where she developed CAIR-LA’s communication strategy around various civil rights advocacy campaigns and initiatives. While at CAIR-LA, Yasmin also penned multiple opinion pieces and articles published in the LA Times and the Orange County Register pertaining to contemporary American Muslim issues and conducted interviews with local and national news outlets such as ABC News, USA Today, and the Associated Press.
