Sommer Iqbal-2015 CLDP Intern

Sommer Iqbal

Major: International Political Economy
School: University of Texas at Dallas
Interned Under:
Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (TX-30)

Sommer Iqbal is a 20 year old, International Political Economy major at the University of Texas at Dallas. She is interested in social justice and activism, environmental policy, and South Asian and Middle Eastern affairs.

During the summer of 2015, Sommer had the opportunity to intern at the office of Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D TX-30) via the Muslim Public Affairs Council’s Congressional Leadership Development Program. While interning on Capitol Hill, Sommer worked closely with the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, allowing for her to gain a broader understanding of environmental policy issues as well as of how the legislative process works. At the office, she had the opportunity to handle all front desk duties and she wrote press releases and responses to constituent letters. One project that she especially enjoyed working on was the reintroduction of H.Res.324, a resolution that commends American Muslims for their faith; she conducted outreach for it and updated the bill language. The greatest lesson that she learned through her internship is that it is possible, and it is necessary, for minorities to get involved in the political arena to make lasting, impactful changes.

While Sommer is not sure yet what to do career-wise, her ultimate goal is to help the Muslim community through her work as much as possible. One of dreams is to work for the White House as a liaison for the Muslim community, but she also hopes to get involved in local government, and would like to be governor of her home-state of Texas in the future.
