Safia Farole is a PhD candidate in Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). At UCLA she specializes in the subfield of Comparative Politics, with a focus on politics in Africa. Her main research interests are political institutions, economic development, and identity and politics in Africa. Safia’s doctoral dissertation is on the relationship between identity and political representation in South Africa and Kenya. In her research Safia uses mixed methodologies, including qualitative analysis, experimental methods, and she has experience conducting fieldwork in South Africa. In addition to her research, Safia has a passion for teaching at the college level. She has several years of experience teaching undergraduates at UCLA. In particular, Safia enjoys helping first generation college students navigate through higher education, and she intends to continue doing so after becoming a professor. Safia is dedicated to continue using her academic platform to educate college students on topics such as Islam and democracy, and politics in Muslim majority countries.
