Jenan Abu-Hakmeh is an honors student attending the New Jersey Institute of Technology on a full-academic scholarship, where she studies international business and marketing with a minor in legal studies. Currently, she is a junior studying in Santander, Spain at the University of Cantabria. Among her achievements at NJIT, she founded her campus chapter of the United Nations Foundation’s organization Girl Up, a campaign devoted towards advocating policy changes and raising funds and awareness to improve the disadvantaged situations females around the world face. Upon completing her first year at NJIT, Jenan was awarded the Lisa A. Pierce: Rising Star Student Leader Award, in recognition of her ambition to have a positive impact at NJIT. Off-campus, she is involved in her masjid community and has organized an Islamic awareness event called Roses for Peace, in which volunteers from the Islamic Center of Passaic County distributed roses in New York City with Islamic messages to combat the Islamophobia prevalent in today’s society. Jenan’s passion to educate and empower those around her has driven her interest in legal affairs and policy making; accordingly, she has interned at the Superior Court of New Jersey, the US House of Representatives, and the Litigation Team of Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of NJ.
