Rasheeda Munira Plenty will be a junior at Zaytuna College in this upcoming academic year and is pursuing a degree in Islamic Law and Theology. Prior to Zaytuna College, she attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Michigan, where she respectively attained a BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and a Masters of Fine Arts in Poetry. Her time at both institutions afforded her the opportunity to participate in developing an oral history project connected to issues of redlining in
historic Kansas City neighborhoods, in organizing annual literature symposiums, and in building a translation initiative aimed at supporting new translators, among many other projects. Her translations of contemporary Arabic poetry have been published in several literary magazines, including Banipal, Pleiades, and the Washington Square Review. Rasheeda, also, attended Zaytuna’s Summer Arabic Intensive for three summers, which ignited her love of the language and cemented her desire to be a part of the integral endeavor that is Zaytuna College. Her time, while focused on classes and studying, is also filled with involvement in local community and student organizations, which has allowed her to gain further experience in developing programs that respond to the needs of her communities.
Rasheeda’s Message to Supporters:
There will always be work, and Prophet Muhammad’s life, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, gives us the example of the pinnacle, the utmost height and fruition of human work billah. And while we are nowhere near that, our seeking it continuously, even after we fall short, shines as a glimmer of that Prophetic beacon. For me, your efforts and support are one such glimmer. With them, we students are able to strive and work and build that much easier. Jazakum Allahu khair. May Allah grant you only the best of This Life and the Hereafter. Insha’Allah, we will take up your light and, through our efforts, support others as we have been supported.
