Message to Supporters: Since the scholarship, I have finished my studies abroad in the Middle East. I pursued an independent research project there on “Creativity as a Vehicle for Societal Change: Can the Arts and Music Drive Positive Societal Change in the Middle East?”. I filmed a documentary on this topic as well with the funds I was supplied and worked with a translator to make my first ever foreign film in Arabic. I can’t thank you enough for the opportunity. Without you I wouldn’t have been able to afford the equipment to make my documentary. Your funds also helped me afford studying abroad — and the memories, connections I made, and growth I experienced was priceless. Thank you, thank you, shukraan.

Bio: Double majoring in Communications and Arabic, alongside the Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Marina Qutab will soon begin her senior year this Fall. By fusing her passions for communication, media and culture, and film, she strives to creatively promote and build a conscious, sustainable world.

She has conducted meaningful research at her university to delve into consumer culture and unearthed specific tactics to drive more conscious, ecological choices that benefit human and environmental health. She will continue to drive positive change abroad in the Fall Semester of her senior year through the School of International Training (SIT) program, “Jordan: Modernization and Social Change.” Here she will take a journalist approach to answering her Independent Study Project research question of, “As Modernization in Jordan Poses Social and Environmental Issues, How Can Jordanians Adapt to Promote a Just and Thriving Planet?” As her research question denotes, she is not only dedicated to protecting the planet for future generations, she is committed to addressing issues in public policy including gender inequality, migrant and refugee crises, islamophobia, and more pressing societal issues.
