Bio: Ayesha Islam is currently majoring in Political Science and double minoring in Creative Writing and Arabic at Bryn Mawr College. Although she was born in Arizona and grew up moving homes every 2-3 years, she currently lives (and has lived for the past several years) in New York City. Ayesha is involved with MIST Philadelphia and MIST New York, her masjid back home, and various other Muslim communities in her life. She’s done social justice work with Amnesty International for the past five years, and spent the past summers interning with Center for American Progress, New York Supreme Court, a local Congresswoman, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio’s campaign, and elsewhere. This summer, she is studying Arabic at the Noor Majan Training Institute in Ibri, Oman. Ayesha hopes to fight against police brutality, post-9/11 discrimination against Muslim-Americans, and violence against women – including human trafficking and girls’ educations in developing countries — in her future work.
